Review Guidelines

KnoxAround works because neighbors tell each other what really happened. These are the rules for reviews, in plain language. They are part of our Terms of Use.

Writing a review

  • Only review what you experienced yourself. Not a friend's story, not something you heard.
  • Say what happened. Who you dealt with, what they did, what it cost, whether you would go back. Specific beats dramatic.
  • Keep it about the business. You can name the owner or the person who served you by the name they use at work. Do not go after anyone's private life, looks, family, or politics.
  • No private details. No home addresses, personal phone numbers, license plates, or photos of people who did not agree to be photographed.
  • Your own words and photos. Nothing copied from another site or another person.
  • One review per experience. If things change, edit your review rather than posting another one.

Who should not review a business

  • The owner, their family, or their employees.
  • Anyone who owns or works for a competing business.
  • Anyone who was offered money, a discount, a gift, or any favor for the review.

If you have any connection to the business beyond being a customer, say so in the review. Undisclosed insider reviews are against federal law as well as our rules.

If you own the business

Claim your listing and reply in public. A calm, specific response is the best thing you can do with a bad review. Do not ask reviewers to take reviews down, offer them anything to change one, or threaten them. Do not write, buy, or ask for reviews of your own business.

What gets removed

We apply the same standard to every review, positive or negative, and we never remove a review because of its star rating or because a business disagrees with it. We remove reviews that:

  • are clearly false or misleading;
  • are defamatory, harassing, abusive, obscene, or sexually explicit;
  • attack someone over race, religion, sex, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, or another protected characteristic;
  • expose a person's private information or a business's confidential information;
  • we reasonably believe are fake, paid for, or written by someone with an undisclosed connection to the business;
  • come from duplicate accounts or are duplicates of the same experience;
  • are about something other than the business they are attached to.

When a review is removed for a fixable reason, we may tell the author why so they can post a version that follows the rules. KnoxAround is a private site and the final decision on what appears here is ours; see section 7 of the Terms of Use for how that works.
